Our Little Fish

This summer, we decided Ethan was finally ready for "real" swim lessons. So we enrolled him with two of his little buddies and they had the best time. Ethan discovered that he loves "swimming" (or floating independently around the pool with his head in the water) and is completely fearless (which can be a good and bad thing at the same time).

The only scary moment was on the last day, Ethan's teacher let all the kids go down the adult slide by themselves and she was supposed to catch them at the bottom (since they can't actually swim and the water level was about 4 ft deep). Well...she didn't realize that the lifeguard at the top of the slide sent two kids down too close together (one of those kids being Ethan). So, she caught the first kid at the bottom of the slide...but didn't see that Ethan exited the slide just seconds later. So Ethan is headfirst in the water being carried along by the current and none of the lifeguards even knew he was there. All of us parents and grandparents start screaming our heads off and I tell you...if this scenario had lasted even a second longer, we all would have been in the pool rescuing him ourselves. Fortunately, the guards finally saw him and he was actually fine. And though the whole incident completely traumatized me for days, Ethan was ready to go down the slides again after ten minutes. Sigh. Lesson learned: Always be prepared to rescue your own child, even if there are two professionally trained lifeguards just inches away from them.
